about the nicolas

I'm a university undergrad in my twenties, I was a computer-science major but I am now majoring in classical studies (the studies of I'm a university undergrad in my twenties, I was a computer-science major but I am now majoring in classical studies (the studies of ancient Greece and Rome).

I guess maybe I should share a bit about why I like the Classics. I have found that the more I read the Classics the more I enjoy them; I started with the Stoic philosophers Marcus Aurelius and Epictetus, and then read Nietzsche's Birth of Tragedy, which really got me interested in reading the Athenian playwrights Aeschylus, Sophocles, and Euripides. I started with Euripides' Bacchae, and I was immediately obsessed. The athenian playwrights have the whole breadth of human emotion and experience, and Ovid too in his Metamorphoses; he depicts love, loss, sorrow, anger, fear, betrayal, joy, it's all there in the Classics. Really it amazes me how the Classical writers understood how humans think and act so well, despite the fact that they lived so long ago.

Also, I am very much interested in a couple of dead languages and the philology of the Germanic languages; I took two semesters of Latin and completed the Duolingo course (and have rusted since but would love to get back on it), but I recently discovered a new dead language that has obsessed me: Old Frisian. It's a dead language that I've sort of fallen in love with after listening to someone speaking in (modern) Frisian on Youtube, and reading a bunch about the grammar. It just sounds so beautiful, and in my opinion it's a lot easier to read than Latin just because of the way the sentences are generally constructed. I plan to write a bunch here about Old Frisian when I get the time to finish my studies.

I also am an aspiring novelist. I have been working almost daily since November of 2023 on a high fantasy novel. I have well over 70k words of notes about the world and characters as of December 2025 but I haven't started on the draft yet -- I am so close though!! I'm in the final stages of preparation, writing an outline of all the major scenes. It's so exciting, it's all I can think about.

Ummm I dunno what else there is to know about me. I love coffee. I love dogs. I have two pet goldfish.
